| General_note: "This map was compiled and prepared by H.P. Krause in 1866 under my direction and at my expense from personal examination and public maps. It represents the topographical situation of the region of the City of New York west of the Central Park, the street improvements, buildings, etc. at that time. It was an illustration of the argument in favor of the passage of Chap. 550 of the Laws of 1866, and it was so used while that law was under consideration as a Bill before the Committee of Cities of the Senate and of the assembly, at Albany, in the winter of 1866. It was again used in the following year before the same committees, when Chap 697 of the Laws of 1867 as a Bill was under their consideration. In each year I advocated the passage of the act before those committees. Under the laws referred to, popularly known as the "West Side Acts," the Riverside Park, Morningside Park and other improvements were laid out, and the grades of the West Side were established. Afterwards and while I was a Commissioner and President of the Department of Public Parks,--1875-1878--progress was made in the construction of some of these works. This map has an historical value in relation to these laws and improvements, and as a representation of the region when they were first contemplated. I present this map to the New York Historical Society. New York, 23 December 1882 [signed] Wm. R. Martin[,] a member" |
