General_note: NYHS map 8616 (1st edition, 3rd impression, 1755) is in better condition and is on 4 separate sheets (of 2 joined sheets each).
General_note: The NYHS copy of the 3rd edition, 1st impression of this map (1773?) comprises four sheets of four joined pieces each, backed with cloth (137 x 195 cm.); it has been framed for exhibition purposes. This 3rd-edition copy was "printed for Jefferys and Faden . . .at the Corner of St. Martins Lane Charing Cross London," presumably no earlier than 1773, the date usually given for the formation of the partnership. The 3rd edition contains voluminous printed notes, situated in blank spaces at sea, on the various cartographic and navigation problems involved in the compilation and making of the map. The author notes that the map was first drawn in 1750 but needed numerous corrections prior to its initial 1755 printing. NOTA BENE: A hand-drawn red-ink line around the general area of New England bears the recurring ms. note "Mr. Oswald's Line" and has been ascribed to John Jay, an ascription which, if accurate, would make this copy of Mitchell's map one of the very rare "red-line" maps figuring in the negotiations to settle the boundaries between British and United States territory in the aftermath of the Revolution. Known others are in the British Museum ("King George's copy") and in Madrid.
Extent: 1 printed map on 8 joined sheets
Dimensions: 141 x 192 cm., folded to 141 x 97 cm.
Medium: black ink, with color wash, on paper backed with cloth
General_note: First edition, first impression. The notice "Sold by And. Miller opposite Katherine Street in the Strand" misspells both Millar's and the Katharine Street names; the errors were corrected in the second impression--see NYHS 8616, a copy of the 3rd impression of that year. See Tooley, p. 86.
Local_note: There are two (reduced?) ms. facsimile copies: maps 2461 and 9578.
